Appointment of Trustees

Trustees hold office for an indefinite period subject to clause 11 of the Trust Deed (Termination of Trusteeship). New Trustees must be appointed by resolution of the Trustees at a special meeting.

Governing Document.

Uganda Schools Trust is a charitable trust and the purposes and administration arrangements are set out in our Deed of Trust.

Charitable Purposes.

Our purposes, as recorded in our Deed of Trust, are to promote the education of children in Ugandan Schools and the progressive development of Ugandan Schools.

Activities and Achievemnets.

In the year we have provided support for three schools in the west of Uganda; Kyebambe Girl’s Secondary School, Buheesi Secondary School and Glorious Preparatory School. We have purchased a considerable number of text books for all three schools- in Buheesi the number of students sharing English books has fallen from 10 per copy to 2 to per copy.

At Glorious Preparatory School, in addition to the purchase of books and educational materials, the Trust was able to fund the bringing of a piped water supply to the school. Contributions were also made towards the salaries of teachers in the school.

The Trust has sponsored 15 girls at Kyebambe Secondary School and one other at Greenville High School in Mukono. These range from Secondary1 to Secondary 6.

A digital projector and laptop were donated to Kyebambe by Senergy Ltd to facilitate the implementation of a pilot scheme run by the Ugandan Government. Funds were also provided for the purchase of a screen for the projector. A second laptop PC was also given to the school by Senergy.

Three Trustees, Alexander Riddell, Elizabeth Riddell and Anne Harrison travelled to Uganda for three weeks in February/March 2010 at their own expense. They were able to visit the schools supported by the Trust and to discuss present and future expenditure with representatives of the three schools. They were also able to meet the girls being sponsored by the Trust.

Throughout the year a number of fund raising events were held including car boot sales, coffee mornings, poetry reading and a sale of nearly new clothes. In addition the Trust has been supported by a large number of individual donations, standing orders and by St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen which has adopted the Trust as one of its charities for this year. Further activities are in hand or planned for the future.

In the meantime the Trust continues to respond to the expressed needs of the schools listed above.  Funding has been secured to bring one of the Ugandan teachers to UK in September 2010 to study management, organisation and methods in a Scottish school.

Trustees Remuneration and Expenses.

The Trust Deed prohibits remuneration to the Trustees and none was given. No expenses were claimed or given to the Trustees.

Reserves.

An end of year surplus of £5950 will enable the Trust to fulfil its commitments to Ugandan Schools to the end of 2010.Standing Orders totalling £105 per month will ensure a continued supply of funds even if there is no further fund raising.

The Trustees will continue to seek further means of raising funds.

Approved by the Trustees and signed on their behalf.

Alex Riddell, Treasurer.
